Donations of a Different Kind...

Donations of many different kinds are welcomed by Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity.  For example, during 2012, a building lot in Spillville was donated to Winneshiek Habitat.  John and Mary Klimesh, owners of Java John’s Coffee House, were the donors.   “We know of the important work that Habitat does in building affordable housing for residents of Winneshiek County and we want to do our part to support their efforts,” stated Mary Klimesh.  As long-time residents of Winneshiek County, John and Mary said that they have observed the work of Habitat for Humanity over many years and have been impressed with the progress the local chapter has made.  The Klimeshes, who now live in Decorah, were once residents of Spillville.

Gus Johnson, Executive Director for the Winneshiek County Habitat chapter, noted that “This is our first opportunity to build a home in Spillville so we are especially thrilled with this donation. The Board hasn’t decided when we will build there, but it will be in a year or two.”

Johnson commented that the cost of building houses continues to increase.  “Along with the cost of materials, Habitat has needed to spend more money on contractors.”  New construction rules and regulations mean that work volunteers once did now must be completed by professionals. Given these increased costs, Board President Dave Carlson added that “Donations such as the Klimesh lot are especially critical to the continued successful activity of a non-profit organization such as the Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity chapter.”
